Our top piece of advice for anyone wishing to go ahead with a surgical procedure is pretty simple. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Which is why we wanted to take the time to interview the lovely Madeline so that you can learn from her experience with us.

What is the purpose of a tummy tuck / abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. Both men and women can be a candidate for abdominoplasty, and it’s common to undergo the procedure after losing a lot of weight or to restore abdominal muscles that have been weakened or separated at some point of the patient’s life. The causes for this can be age, overweight or quite commonly, childbirth and pregnancy. The abdominal muscles can be restored and tightened with abdominoplasty which leads to a flatter and firmer stomach but will also help with posture and other connected issues like urinary incontinence, lack of body confidence and pain or discomfort when wearing tighter garments.

Who is a Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Your overall weight and health are two major factors deciding if you could be a good candidate for the procedure.

The surgery should never be considered as an alternative for weight loss, it is important for you to lose as much excess weight as possible beforehand. To have a sustainable result you must stay close to your weight following the surgery, so if you’re planning to lose weight post-surgery or if you are continuously losing and gaining weight the abdominoplasty may not be a good idea until you’ve reached your ideal weight. Same applies if you are planning to have a baby, it is important to know that the results from your abdominoplasty may not last.

To undergo abdominoplasty, you must be a non-smoker. While the procedure is considered relatively safe, smokers are at much higher risk of complications. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to quit smoking several weeks before considering your surgery to eliminate potential risks during the procedure.  If you happen to be a non-smoker who is looking to increase the appearance of your stomach and/or strengthen your abdominal muscles and are likely to keep the same weight (not planning to get pregnant) – you may be the perfect candidate for a tummy tuck.
